In teaching mathematical statistics it is desirable that students of engineering and natural sciences could study the methods of statistical processing based on data of real experiments. Conditions for these experiments are of critical importance to justify the application of statistical methods. The article considers a classic Henry Cavendish’s experiment to determine a mean density of the Earth from this point of view. The article gives a detailed description of the experimental Cavendish’s setup, ideas, his experiments are based on, and a method to determine the values used for assessment of the mean density of the Earth. It also concretizes the equation of a pendulum model with friction on which Cavendish implicitly (and neglecting a friction) relied. It is shown that the formal use of methods of mathematical statistics is not always justified. Detailed records of all experiments, published by Cavendish, enable us to study these data in terms of mathematical statistics, convince us of their statistical inhomogeneity and impossibility to construct a confidence interval to estimate accuracy. The article proposes an alternative way for processing Cavendish's data implicitly using the pendulum model equation with friction to reduce an effect of systematic errors and improve matching the Cavendish results with modern data.

DOI: 10.7463/0416.0835961
A.V. Yaminskii
Approaches of different epochs ranging from the era of Emperor Nicolas I to nowadays on evaluation and development of abilities, skills and motivation developed by educational system are discussed in terms of notion ‘competence’ recently introduced as the main measure and standard of graduates compliance with the labor market demands. In XIX-XX centuries the benchmark related to real achievements of the graduates dominated, at the turn of the Millennium it accepted more formal and impersonal form. Term ‘competence’ origin and meaning evolution is discussed. Based on the experience of pilot school Proficient English in the Business World (PEBW BMSTU) it is shown that succession and innovation traditions are predefined more by competency, experience and toil of the trainers than by formal templates and guidance documents.

The information system to support processes of professional self-determination is considered, which allows you to determine the professionally important qualities of users with the help of vocational guidance methods and choose according to these appropriate professions. The three-level conceptual model is proposed that reflects the stages of professional self-determination, which requires the use of the information system for the diagnostics and adjustment of professional intentions. An algorithm is presented for adding professions in an information system, which is based on the method of establishing correspondences between professions and areas of professional activity that promotes correct and successful choice of future profession. The conclusion is given about the need to use the system in a selection committee of educational institutions and in the human resources department of enterprises.

77-48211/419126 The «Smorgasbord» Approach to Educational Assessment
# 06, June 2012
A.V. Zaiceva
Classic forms of examination imply that the tasks are distributed among students randomly. In this case an advanced student may receive a problem related to the branch which he/she finds challenging, while a less diligent person will be assigned a task he/she considers easy. This paper introduces an alternative approach that gives the examinees an opportunity of choosing tasks by themselves. Although imposing certain limitations on the total number and average complexity of the tasks selected, this approach provides a wide freedom of choice and eliminates the random factor.

# 03, March 2012
S.P. Severov
The author shows that the result of higher engineering professional education in the form of a certified specialist who has knowledge, skills and professional communication skills, for example in the field of underwater robotics and marine industry, is the goal of a complex process of university education. In particular, the complex is characterized by Bauman MSTU taught subjects to 40-50 with the total number up to 9900 academic hours. Sufficient parametrized certainty of objectives can be considered as higher education in engineering design as a project, and all educational processes associated with them - as reasonable processes. The author argues that controlled management of a quality competitive, low-budget team project, which aims to create, within one year life cycle, an original student-submersible ROV- hydrobot, at world level of quality is complex. But it is a solvable problem for higher engineering professional education in Russia. The solution of this problem is achieved by organizing academic experience of students, optimization of dynamic flexible forms of organization, management skills current student role their real abilities, knowledge, abilities and skills in design and use of theory and practice of project management based on international standards.

V.V. Burlai, N.E. Suflyaeva, L.R. Yurenkova
This article considers different ways of improving the module-rating system applied to the “Engineering Graphics” department. The authors analyzed features of current and scheduled academic performance ratings. It was suggested to control academic performance ratings of students continuously during the whole term. The survey of graphical tasks’ labor intensity showed that students spent more time in classes than 30 or 40 years ago; the quality level of training didn’t increase proportionally to time spent. Proposals concerning revision of set of disciplines in general and reducing the number non-core disciplines in favor of fundamental and technical disciplines were made. The authors suggested using new methods to motivate students; these methods are widely used at BMSTU.
