SINGAPORE: Swedish plant biochemist becomes third president of NTU
05.07.2011 Swedish renowned plant biochemist Bertil Andersson became the third president of Singapore's Nanyang Technological University (NTU) on Friday, succeeding Su Guaning.
Andersson has said he would lead the university to become a great global university by 2015 by pursuing five peaks of excellence such as new media, innovation, health care, sustainability as well as the blending of east and west. A pioneer in research related to artificial leaves and their creation, he has a long-standing association with the Nobel Foundation. Andersson became NTU's provost in 2007, where he strengthened the university's profile as one of the fastest-growing research- intensive universities in the world. Su has been the university's president since 2003 and has led the university to become one of the youngest among the world's top 100 universities. He is now appointed president emeritus by the university. Over the past eight years, the NTU built three new schools and made its way into the world's top 100 list.
