TANZANIA: Universities plan to offer Doctorates

Tanzania. - Three colleges have teamed up to award doctorate degrees from this month to ease the problem of lack of such courses in the country’s higher education institutions.The Institute of Finance Management (IFM) and Open University of Tanzania (OUT) will this month sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a Netherlands-based university, Groningen, to cement the partnership.
According to the project coordinator, Dr Jim Yonazi, the MoU will pave the way for establishing the programme at OUT.
The institution has been accredited by the National Council for Technical Education (Nacte) to offer PhD programmes. On the other hand, the IFM is still processing its accreditation.
“Since this college is not entitled to offer PhD courses we decided that they will be conducted at OUT, but we will supervise them jointly,” Dr Yonazi said. He explained that for a start seminars for interested candidates have started. These are basically meant to sharpen writing skills of interested PhD candidates.
He said under the programme students will have to study for four years to accomplish the course.
“We expect to start with at least 20 students, as we are now calculating the tuition fees. Our intention is to make them affordable to most candidates, and thus enable more students to enrol for the doctorate degree,” Dr Yonazi said.
He explained that they opted to start with a seminar for potential candidates as they established that the main challenge facing many who qualify is the process of selecting, refining and then writing a PhD dissertation. “So far the response has been impressive; we have got at least the convincing number of participants whom we have divided into two groups of 35 each and we have decided to have two seminars,” he said.
