INDIA: Social justice through higher education
05.05.2010
India has
initiated action to ensure social justice among its citizen through
higher education, by increasing student intakes in universities and
colleges to 30% by 2020, reports the Assam Tribune. The current gross
enrolment ratio in higher education is 12.4%, said Finance Minister
Pranab Mukherjee at the Indian Institute of Management, Shillong, last
week.
"Education acts as a liberating force to fight against poverty and hindrances to growth," he said, adding that education is not only a vehicle of growth but also an "effective and reliable instrument to ensure social justice". The central government had initiated structural reforms in the education sector, Mukherjee said while urging all stakeholders to join hands to achieve a respectable gross enrolment ratio. "This will require effective partnerships with all stakeholders and similar collaborative efforts," the Finance Minister said. Full report on the Assam Tribune site |
