The purpose of geometrical parameters of the tap’s cutting part during processing of non-continuous surfaces

In this article the authors consider an analytical form of the pattern change in the total radial force in forming discontinuous threaded surfaces by using the generator cutting scheme (taps, dies, die heads, etc.). A modeling method for various configurations of surfaces for threading was proposed. The authors propose an engineering technique of design decision-making for tool’s working elements and of the purpose of geometrical parameters of the tap’s cutting part during processing of non-continuous surfaces. The possibility of eliminating agreement between peak load on the cutting tooth and the moment of its interaction with a non-continuous surface was investigated.

The article presents the results of experimental studies of physical phenomena occurring during threading structural steel 45 with taps. It was experimentally confirmed that the greatest relative loads are on the cutting profiles located at the base of the cutting cone. This fact determines their more intense wear. The article includes the analysis of changes in the cutting profiles in the radial direction, changes in transition of the main and minor cutting edges and their corner radius. The authors developed a generalized dependence of tap wear rate in major-diameter.

The article is considered with origin of spiral drills failure.  Experimental  results of  functional failure (drill breaking) are presented.  Changing of physical parameters  leading to failure in drilling  was studied.  The article identify influence of process parameters  to  drill cutting tip  wear.
